How is PTE Academic scored?

Our scoring is designed to give you the fairest possible result.

You won't interact with a human examiner, reducing the risk of human bias. Instead, your test will be marked by our sophisticated AI scoring system — trained by experts, and refined daily by millions of data points.

Multiple choice answers are scored as right or wrong, but scores for more complex question types, like essay questions, are based on a mix of criteria. Some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the automated score is finalised — helping to ensure scores are fair and accurate

Scores for studying

Institutions set their own minimum scores. Typically you will need the following minimum scores, but always check your institution for specific requirements.

Scores for visa applications

PTE Academic tests are accepted for visa and immigration applications in Australia and New Zealand. PTE Academic UKVI is accepted in the UK for work visas and studying below degree-level. The minimum score you need depends on which visa you are applying for.

A chart showing the correspondence between PTE Academic scores, CEFR levels, and IELTS Academic bands. The top section maps PTE scores (10–90) to CEFR levels using horizontal bars: A2 spans roughly 30–42, B1 spans 36–58, B2 spans 50–75, C1 spans 59–82, and C2 spans 76–90, with dotted lines marking the easiest tasks and arrows indicating the range to the most difficult tasks. The bottom table shows score equivalences: PTE 24 = IELTS 4.5, PTE 31 = IELTS 5.0, PTE 39 = IELTS 5.5, PTE 47 = IELTS 6.0, PTE 55 = IELTS 6.5, PTE 63 = IELTS 7.0, PTE 71 = IELTS 7.5, PTE 79 = IELTS 8.0, PTE 86 = IELTS 8.5, and PTE 90 = IELTS 9.0. A footnote notes these are minimum PTE thresholds related to each IELTS band.

How PTE Academic scores compare

We regularly publish research to show how PTE Academic relates to both the CEFR and to other tests such as IELTS Academic. The latest tables are shown here.

Please note: our concordance with IELTS has been updated based on research published in July 2025 which reflects the updated PTE Academic test. The CEFR table remains unchanged. We will also publish updated relationships with other test providers (e.g. TOEFL) over the coming months.

Disclaimer: This table shows how PTE Academic and IELTS Academic test scores compare to each other. It does not show information about accepted tests or score requirements for universities or visa programs. Governments and institutions decide which tests to accept and which score requirements to set. Check the official website for your institution or visa program to learn more about accepted tests and score requirements relevant to you.
