Indian students applying for an AIP Study Visa
What is an Approval-in-Principle (AIP) study visa?
It’s a new additional measure to support international students. It’s a two-stage temporary visa process in which students receive an Approval-in-Principle to start their Canadian education online and from home when completing the first stage of the process. Learn more.
IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) India
IRCC now recognizes PTE Academic as one of the mandatory SELT (Secure English Language Tests) for its regular study permit application stream, also known as Non-Study Direct Stream (Non-SDS).
These are the documents you require to obtain an AIP for the non-SDS pathway (potential Indian international students ONLY):
Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institute
PTE Academic test results
Evidence of financial ability to pay for tuition + transportation + living expenses
Most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript
Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for Quebec-bound students
Other requirements may apply. Learn more and the Canadian Government’s Study Canada page.

For Canadian educational institutions and universities
In 2018, the Canadian government launched the Student Direct Stream program that allows international post-secondary students from select countries to fast-track the processing of their Canadian study permit.
Canada has become the world’s fastest-growing destination for international students, welcoming 642,480 international students in 2019.
With Indian students accounting for more than a third of all Canadian study permits issued in 2019, India has surpassed China to become the top sending market. Roughly 46% of these Indian international students came to study in Canada through the regular study permit stream, also called 'non-SDS'.
The interest in this pathway was even more noticeable with the other Student Direct Stream countries – China, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal, and Vietnam – where the non-SDS route was a much more popular choice with international students who sought to study in Canada.
