Hundreds of students and skilled migrants from around the world living in the Northern Territory will no longer have to travel interstate to take the required English language proficiency test to work or study thanks to a new test center which has now opened in Darwin.

The Pearson VUE Test Center, at the Group Training Northern Territory Facility on Woods Street, was officially opened by Northern Territory Minister for Workforce Training, the Hon Selena Uibo.

The center will deliver the world’s most reliable, secure, and fully computer-based English test, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic).

Its opening is made possible by the Site Institute with the support of the Northern Territory Government.

Minister Uibo said: “The Territory Labor Government is pleased to support the Pearson English Language Test Center as part of our comprehensive plan to boost the NT population.

“More people means more jobs for Territorians, and this new facility eliminates the need for people to travel interstate for testing and keeps them right here in the Territory.”

Pearson Regional Manager of PTE Academic Joseph Hernandez said: “PTE Academic is approved by the Department of Home Affairs for all visa applications, and used by all Australian universities to assess international students’ English language proficiency.

“The arrival of PTE Academic will assist in the retention of skilled professionals and international graduates in the Northern Territory, who will be required to sit an English proficiency test for visa and registration purposes.

“As an Artificial Intelligence-driven assessment, PTE Academic has changed the way people take language tests.

“Pearson test centers provide testing on a daily basis so there is no waiting period for people to take a test and on average results are available in 1.2 days, making it the fastest test available.”

Pearson owns, or partners with a number of University and education providers, to operate 31 test centers in Australia, including five in regional Australia opened this year.
