Technical information 

What sort of computer do I need to take a practice test?
Make sure your computer meets our system requirements. Also perform our equipment check.
What internet connection speed do I need?
An absolute minimum of 512kbps, but 1mbps is better.
Which headphones do I need?
Any good headphones or speakers, in particular headsets that feature a feedback loop.
What microphone do I need?

Most external microphones should be fine. Try to avoid using the microphone built in to your laptop.

What browsers are supported?

The practice tests work with these web browsers:
• Internet Explorer 7 or 8
• Firefox 3.5.6 or 3.6

Please install one of these browsers. Then, if you still experience problems, please contact us for support.

Why do I have to wait so long for audio or questions to load?
A number of factors outside our control can influence the test experience. These include your internet connection and the amount of local internet traffic.
Why does my audio player freeze?
A number of factors outside our control can influence the test experience. These include your internet connection and the amount of local internet traffic.
Why do I see an error message on the screen during the test?

There are several reasons errors may appear, but they are most often caused by using a computer which does not meet the system requirements.

If you experience an error, check the system requirements and also run our equipment check before you log back in to the test. If your computer fails any of the checks, you will not be able to use it to take the practice test.

If your computer does meet the system requirements but you continue to experience errors, please contact us for help.

Why did my test crash?

A number of factors outside our control can influence the test. These include your internet connection and the amount of local internet traffic.

Other programs running on your computer may also interfere with the practice tests.

The screen of my test has frozen. What should I do?
Try clicking Save for Later to save your test answers so far. If this does not work, try closing your web browser or turning your whole computer off. Your responses will have been saved so you can always return to the test.
Why can't I hear my voice when I play back the audio?

Perhaps your microphone is turned off or the volume is down on your speakers.

Run our equipment check to make sure everything is working properly

I accidentally closed my browser during the test. What should I do?
You can return to the test whenever you like. Just go to the practice tests page on our site and click the Login button.
When I login and click on the scored practice test, a window pops-up asking me to click on continue to start the test. However when I click on continue I can't go any further. What do I need to do?
If you have not blocked pop-ups, check if you have recently installed any toolbars for your browser (e.g. Yahoo, Google, AVG, Winamp) and if so, disable them.
